I feel like when most people think about 3D anime, most people think of how bad it can look. But just like how there’s a lot of bad examples, there are also a bunch of awesome looking examples that show off not only that 3D anime can look great, but also doesn’t have to follow one single style.
Here are the (in my opinion) 15 best 3D anime of all time.
The absolutely best 3D anime animations I have ever seen. While analyzing it I was genuinely struggling to see what parts were 2D and what were 3D in some scenes. The first video on the list here is probably the best example for that. If you want to learn more about how I think these have been created and how you can create animation in this style yourself, check out the video I’ve made about exactly that right here: 👇
If anyone needs to figure out perfect looking 3D anime, it's people animating dance choreography. And nobody does it better. The mix between 2D and 3D is almost indistinguishable. Often you really have to be looking for it to spot that it’s 3D.
CGI game trailers usually look rough, but somehow these work really well. They emphasize extreme poses with a lot of foreshortening and love to do extreme expressions. On top of that they do paint overs that are hard to spot, and the 3D characters actually blend into the painterly environments. On top of all that they also have great 2D VFX, bringing it all together reall well.
