2D Anime Lighting Principles

  1. 1 Light and 1 Shadow Color (Cel Shading)

  2. More Shading steps risks looking 3D

  3. Ground Shadows can exist, but don’t have to

    1. Often simplified
  4. Occlusion Shadows are sometimes used to give elements in shadow more depth

  5. Looks over Realism

→ It’s better to have no lighting than too realistic lighting

  6. All gradients are created in compositing

Basics of Anime/NPR lighting

Rule #1: No World Lighting

→ Ambient lighting can be added in the shader or in compositing

Rule #2: No Gradients

→ Any and all gradients will be added in compositing

→ The fewer gradients exist before compositing, the better the end result will look after compositing

Something I recommend:

Disable any shadows created by the 3D lights in your scene.
